9 Ideas for a Dad’s Day to Remember
Dads are typically the most difficult family member to buy a gift for. They either have everything their hearts desire or are quite content with their lot. Let’s be honest, novelty socks, humorous ties and state of the art golf balls have done their dash. After the last 18 months of limited gatherings, Father’s Day 2021 is the perfect time to ditch the tired gifts and plan a day out with your dad (COVID restrictions permitting of course). Here are our favourite ideas to spoil your old man with a day dedicated to him.
1. DAD’S CODE OF CHOICE
Most dads love watching sport (and some even theatre or a movie), and if COVID permits, is there a better gift than tickets (with you in tow of course) to watch his favourite game or show? September 25th sees the AFL Grand Final, and further ahead there’s also the NRL Grand Final on October 3rd. If getting to a game or show isn’t an option, plan a dad’s day in – complete with his favourite snacks, drinks, and the big screen all set up for his viewing pleasure.
2. FOR THE OUTDOORSY DAD
If your dad is a true-blue Aussie outdoorsy type that loves fishing, hiking, or camping, plan a day (or night) that embraces his favourite pursuits. A day outdoors as you wind your way through a hiking trail or wait for the fish to bite is a great opportunity to bond and spend some serious quality time with your dad.
3. DAD’S HAPPY PLACE – THE BBQ
Most dads are right at home with tongs in hand, flipping sizzling steak on the barbie. Father’s Day is best celebrated with family over a casual meal, so let dad take the lead and cheer him on as he grills, and you season and stir-fry. Make the occasion extra special by selecting your dad’s favourite BBQ cuts and beverages so he doesn’t have to lift a finger – just his beloved tongs.
4. HIT THE WATER
If your dad has always dreamt about owning a boat or jet ski, rent one for the day and hit the water together for a bit of fun. For a more wallet friendly option, grab the fishing rods and head to a nearby lake or pond. Bring along some camping chairs, a gourmet packed lunch and some cold brews so you can relax lake-side.
5. LOCK IN SOME TEE TIME
Is your dad a golf fanatic? Sometimes finding the time to swing a club is difficult, so booking in a day at his favourite course is sure to go down a treat. Now’s the time to let him give you some advice about golfing and how to improve your terrible putting technique. Dads hate pity rounds of golf though, so put in your best effort. If you beat him, he’ll be proud, if you lose, you’ll make his day.
6. DADS DO BRUNCH TOO
Break free of any gender stereotypes and head out for a long, indulgent brunch together. Support your local café or visit your dad’s favourite eatery, and make sure to order all the trimmings. If your dad is up for it, you could even check out a bottomless brunch – view the 14 best bottomless brunches around Australia here.
7. WINE (OR WHISKEY) TASTING
Fresh country air, paired with delectable wines and great company make wine tasting a day out you’ll both love! With award-winning wineries dotted across Australia, there’s sure to be one close by. To find a local winery experience, check out this guide. If restrictions mean you’re unable to head along in person, the famous Oak Barrel in Sydney is offering virtual tastings you can enjoy from your lounge. They’ll send you a tasting pack (ranging from wine to whiskey, gin, or beer) and join you online to take you through a virtual tasting experience.
8. DIY WITH DAD
For dads that love a bit of DIY or always have a project on the go, plan a project you can tackle together this Father’s Day. Play the apprentice and let him teach you tricks of the trade, as you give the man cave a makeover, help him sharpen the tools or help build the ultimate outdoor space to house the BBQ. 9. THE LOCKDOWN WORKAROUND
Even the best laid plans are subject to change in this day and age, so if you’re faced with pandemic-related restrictions it pays to be prepared.
