Tarneit Suburb Profile

Where is Tarneit?

Tarneit is a rapidly growing suburb in Melbourne’s west, approximately 30 kilometres from the CBD, in the City of Wyndham. It is easily accessed by the M1 freeway and well serviced by both metropolitan and regional transport. Commuters can take trains from the full-service Tarneit Station which offers plenty of car parking, bike storage facilities and connecting bus services through the residential parts of Tarneit and on to surrounding suburbs. Tarneit is just over 30 minutes’ drive from both Melbourne and Avalon airports.

Living in Tarneit

Tarneit has a population of roughly 35,000 and continues to grow. Rather than having a traditional central village (which is planned for the future), the suburb has 2 shopping centres - Wyndham Village and Tarneit Gardens - that more than service the needs of the local and surrounding communities, with supermarkets, chemists and various other retail and food outlets. Just outside of Tarneit in Hoppers Crossing is the large regional shopping centre Pacific Werribee, which is home to major supermarkets, banking, post and health care facilities, as well as the usual range of retail, lifestyle and food and beverage outlets and a multiplex cinema.

The area is very popular with young families so there are a number of local private and public schools in and around Tarneit including Baden Powell College, Tarneit Senior College, Thomas Carr Catholic College, Westbourne Grammar and Al-Taqwa College as well as some well-utilised child care and early learning centres.

Tarneit is largely comprised of premium housing estates, with more than a dozen already constructed or well underway and a number of new estates currently in development. Construction began in the area in the 1990s so when it comes to houses, Tarneit’s properties are fairly modern, with large homes on average sized blocks, with well-landscaped gardens. There are also a decent number of contemporary style apartment buildings for singles and young professionals.

Property prices are ideal for the first home buyer and renting houses in Tarneit is a breeze with an abundance of well-priced good quality family homes. As well as young families, there are a number of retirees in the area, in their own homes but also living in as many as 5 retirement villages in and around Tarneit.

Things to See and Do in Tarneit

Less than half of Tarneit’s area is developed, with the western half of the suburb still currently agricultural land, or land marked for future housing estates. Its southern border is marked by the trail of the Werribee River and there are lovely wetlands and walking trails to be explored nearby. Many housing developments have purpose built local parks with BBQs, outdoor tables and play equipment for the children.

No suburb is complete without a local pub and Hotel 520 on Sayers Road is a popular spot to take the family for dinner with a reasonably priced bistro, kids play area and a designated sports bar for the sports fans in the family. All three shopping centres also have an extensive range of dining options, with The Tummy Section, Noodle Corner and Biryani House all local favourites.
